A study led by researchers from John Hopkins School of Public Health and the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center shows that “States that have legalized marijuana for medical use have lower rates of prescription painkiller overdose deaths than states that have not.” Even though overall U.S. deaths caused by opioid painkillers is way up, they were 25% lower in states that implemented medical marijuana laws than other states.

This is a large differentiation statistic - and it clearly documents what medical marijuana users have been claiming for years, in fact for millennia if you consider Chinese cannabis remedies for pain from ancient records. Marijuana doesn’t ‘heal’ anyone from pain - but it does treat the experiential symptoms with noticeable effectiveness.

As shown in the Mindfully High text, people who otherwise wouldn’t touch marijuana, especially older citizens, are now considering using pot for their health. They'll of course need all the guidance possible in learning how to take the cannabis pain treatment safely and effectively - but it does work!

This research also indicates that when marijuana is available in a community, younger people who would otherwise be tempted to use addictive and sometimes deadly pharmaceutical painkillers are doing so in fewer numbers because they have the marijuana alternative.

Marijuana reduces physical pain, and also reduces emotional suffering - which helps people deal with acute inner anguish without having to resort to deadly pills. Pot isn't a cure-all by any means, but it does help considerably with a great many health conditions - and it's NOT addictive.

For general reporting on all this, CNN has posted a number of good short videos:
